Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is receiving a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with sharper visuals, smoother performance and several pieces of new content. Players who already own the original Nintendo Switch release will not need to buy the entire game again.
Instead, existing owners can purchase the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack. The process works with both physical and digital copies, although physical owners must keep the original game card inserted while playing.
Here is how to upgrade Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to the Switch 2 Edition and what you need before getting started.
What You Need for the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Upgrade
The Upgrade Pack does not include the original game. You must already own a digital copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or have access to its physical Nintendo Switch game card.
You will also need:
- A Nintendo Switch 2 console
- The original Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game
- An internet connection
- Access to Nintendo eShop
- Enough free storage space for the required download
Players using a physical copy must insert the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game card whenever they want to play. Buying the Upgrade Pack does not convert a physical copy into a fully digital game.
How to Upgrade Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to the Switch 2 Edition
Follow these steps after the Upgrade Pack becomes available:
- Turn on your Nintendo Switch 2 and open Nintendo eShop.
- Select the Nintendo Account you use to purchase games.
- Search for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack.
- Open the product page and purchase the Upgrade Pack.
- Download and install the required data.
- Install Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on your console or insert the original game card.
- Launch the game from the HOME Menu.
Digital owners should make sure the game’s Virtual Game Card is loaded onto the Nintendo Switch 2 they are using. Physical owners only need the original cartridge and the downloaded Upgrade Pack.
If the upgraded features do not appear, close the game and check that both the main software and the Upgrade Pack are fully installed. You can also highlight the game on the HOME Menu, press the Plus Button and select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.
Do You Need to Buy the Full Game Again?
No. Players who already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2 only need the separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack.
Nintendo is also selling a complete Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for newcomers. That version combines the original game with the new Switch 2 enhancements and additional content.
Both options lead to the same upgraded version. The complete edition is intended for players who do not already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2, while the Upgrade Pack provides the cheaper route for existing owners.
What Does the Switch 2 Edition Add?
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is more than a simple resolution update. It improves the presentation while adding new ways to play.
The confirmed upgrades include:
- 4K resolution while playing in TV mode on a compatible display
- Full HD resolution in handheld mode
- Improved performance at 60 frames per second
- A new action-focused battle mode
- The Merc Assault mode
- A new Rare Blade named MOMO
- A new Blade Quest connected to MOMO
- New designs for Pyra and Mythra
The new Pyra and Mythra styles can be unlocked through normal gameplay. Players can also unlock them by scanning their respective amiibo figures.
Merc Assault changes the normal combat structure by allowing players to directly control a team of Blades. It gives returning players a fresh reason to revisit Alrest rather than simply replaying the same adventure with a higher resolution.
Will Your Existing Save Data Work?
The Upgrade Pack adds Nintendo Switch 2 enhancements to the original Xenoblade Chronicles 2 software rather than functioning as an unrelated game.
Players moving from an original Nintendo Switch should transfer their user and save data to Nintendo Switch 2 before continuing. Those who have already completed a system transfer should be able to launch the upgraded game using their existing progress.
Do not select the option to delete save data while managing the game. Deleting or archiving the software itself is different from manually deleting its save file.
Is the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Upgrade Free?
No. The main Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade is sold as a separate paid Upgrade Pack.
This should not be confused with Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country. Nintendo is handling the expansion differently depending on how it is owned.
Standalone digital and physical copies of Torna – The Golden Country will receive a free update enabling the Switch 2 visual and performance enhancements. Players who access Torna through the original Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass will receive its improvements through the main game’s Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack.
In other words, owning Torna as a standalone game does not provide the full Xenoblade Chronicles 2 upgrade for free. The complimentary update only applies to the standalone Torna release.
When Does the Switch 2 Edition Release?
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches on July 30, 2026. The Upgrade Pack and complete edition will be available through Nintendo eShop.
Availability may appear at slightly different times depending on the region and the Nintendo Account connected to the console. Players should check their regional eShop if the Upgrade Pack does not immediately appear in search results.
Is the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Upgrade Worth It?
For returning players, the largest improvements are the jump to 60 FPS and the cleaner image quality. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 originally struggled with image clarity in several areas, particularly during handheld play, so Full HD portable output could make exploring Alrest considerably easier on the eyes.
MOMO, Merc Assault and the new Pyra and Mythra designs also prevent the package from feeling like a purely technical update. Whether those additions justify the price will depend on how much time you plan to spend with the game again, but existing owners do not need to repurchase the full release.
Once the Upgrade Pack is installed, you can continue using the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 copy you already own while gaining access to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition improvements.
