Minecraft has been playable on Nintendo Switch 2 through backward compatibility since the console launched, but it has continued to use the original Switch version. Players waiting for an edition designed specifically for the newer hardware finally have a clearer idea of what Mojang is preparing.
The native Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 edition will launch on October 27, 2026. It will bring improved graphics, support for existing worlds and a digital upgrade path for players who already own the game on Nintendo Switch.
Mojang has not yet confirmed whether the upgrade will be free or paid. Pricing and additional upgrade details are expected to be announced closer to release.
Vibrant Visuals Will Be Enabled by Default
The biggest improvement in the Switch 2 edition is support for Vibrant Visuals. This graphics mode adds more detailed lighting, shadows and environmental effects while keeping Minecraft’s familiar block-based appearance.
Vibrant Visuals will be enabled by default on Nintendo Switch 2. Supported Marketplace content will also be able to use the enhanced graphics, although the feature will not work during split-screen multiplayer and may be unavailable in some worlds or add-ons.
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is also receiving a visual update. Nintendo-themed locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza will benefit from the improved lighting system.
Existing Switch Owners Will Have an Upgrade Option
Players who already own Minecraft on Nintendo Switch can use a digital upgrade path. This will allow them to move to the native Switch 2 edition. Existing worlds and save data can also be transferred. Long-running survival maps and building projects can therefore continue on the newer console.
The upgrade price remains the biggest unanswered question. Mojang has not confirmed whether it will be free, discounted or sold separately.
Marketplace purchases linked to a Microsoft account are also expected to remain available. Mojang may share more detailed transfer instructions before launch.
A Native Version Built for Switch 2
Backward compatibility lets players continue using the original Switch edition, so they do not need to upgrade immediately. The native version targets players who want improved visuals and better use of the Switch 2 hardware.
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026. With Vibrant Visuals, world transfers and an upgrade path confirmed, the native edition should offer a more noticeable improvement than a simple compatibility update.
