The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is bringing Geralt back for another adventure, and new details from Gamescom 2026 give us a much clearer idea of what to expect. The upcoming expansion takes Geralt to a completely new region, introduces fresh enemies and adds a chain weapon that changes how some encounters work.
The expansion is being developed by CD Projekt Red together with Fool’s Theory. It is planned for 2027 and will also be available on Nintendo Switch 2.
Geralt Travels to Dandelion’s Homeland
Songs of the Past begins after the events of The Witcher 3. Geralt has settled into a quieter life at Corvo Bianco, but that peace does not last.
A request involving Dandelion brings him to Letten, the bard’s homeland. This gives the expansion a more personal starting point than another large political conflict. Dandelion’s family and his past play an important role in the story.
During the Gamescom presentation, Geralt searches for Dandelion after realizing that his friend has disappeared. His investigation eventually takes him to the family estate, where he meets Dandelion’s relatives and learns more about what brought him back home.
The trail also leads toward a mysterious location known as the Garden of Thorns. It is connected to an old local story involving a witch, a well and a violent past. As Geralt gets closer, the seemingly peaceful countryside begins to reveal something much darker underneath.
Letten Is a New Open-World Region
Letten is more than a backdrop for the new story. The developers want the area to feel like a functioning rural community.
Its landscapes take inspiration from the countryside of Poland and England. Farms, villages and local industries shape the region, while residents can be seen fishing, keeping bees, breeding horses and producing goods.
Some of these activities connect with each other. Crops can be collected and transported elsewhere for production, helping settlements feel less like groups of NPCs waiting for Geralt to arrive.
Familiar Witcher activities will also return. Players can find notice boards, improve equipment and challenge characters to Gwent while exploring Letten.
Geralt Has a New Chain Weapon
One of the biggest gameplay additions is a chain weapon.
Geralt can use the chain to attack enemies from a distance or pull certain targets toward him. More importantly, it has practical uses against some of the new monsters rather than simply acting as another damage option.
One example involves creatures protected by swarms of insects. Geralt can use the chain to separate them from their protection before moving in for an attack.
The weapon also has an interesting connection to the series’ history. Geralt used a chain while fighting a striga in early material for the original Witcher game. Songs of the Past finally brings the idea back as a proper combat mechanic.
New Monsters Are Waiting in Letten
A new region naturally means new things for Geralt to hunt.
The Gamescom demonstration showed creatures tied to Letten and the Garden of Thorns. Among them are enemies that use swarms for protection, forcing players to think about how they approach the fight instead of relying on the same attack pattern.
The darker areas of Letten also appear closely connected to the region’s folklore. That fits well with the expansion’s direction, where local stories and old family secrets slowly turn into real threats.
The Witcher 3 Remastered Arrives First
Players will not need to wait until 2027 to see The Witcher 3 return.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launches on September 29, 2026, including a Nintendo Switch 2 version. The remaster features visual improvements, changes to combat and a redesigned skill tree. CD Projekt Red says combat has been adjusted to feel smoother and more precise while keeping the core system recognizable.
The remastered package also includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Existing owners will receive the remaster as a free upgrade on supported platforms.
Songs of the Past will follow in 2027 as a new expansion. For Nintendo players, that means Switch 2 will receive both the updated version of The Witcher 3 and Geralt’s next full adventure.
