OVER REQUIEMZ Review – A Darker Kind of Otome Adventure

OVER REQUIEMZ takes the familiar world of The Wizard of Oz and twists it into something far darker. Instead of a cheerful journey down a yellow brick road, Yuhiru is thrown into a hostile version of Oz, sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit, and forced to work alongside a group of dangerous prisoners.

That setup gives the game a strong identity immediately, but what keeps it interesting is the way it handles its characters. This is not an otome game built entirely around raising affection and picking obviously romantic answers. The story spends just as much time on trauma, distrust, obsession and the mysteries surrounding Oz itself.

A Different Kind of Choice System

One of the best things about OVER REQUIEMZ is that it does not rely on a traditional affection meter. Choices are divided into different types, and not every decision is designed to push Yuhiru toward a specific character.

Some options simply change dialogue, while others unlock extra voiced scenes or influence the direction of a route. Important branching choices are also clearly marked, which makes it much easier to explore different outcomes without constantly checking a guide.

That approach makes the game more accessible, although it does remove some tension from major decisions. When the game tells you that a choice matters, there is less risk involved in experimenting. Still, the system works well for players who want to focus on the story rather than repeatedly reloading saves.

Fact and Dark Routes Are the Main Attraction

Each romance route can develop in two very different directions.

Fact routes explore the characters in a more grounded way, while Dark routes push their personalities toward obsession, dependency and much more destructive behaviour. Importantly, the Dark routes are not simply bad endings attached to an otherwise normal story.

They receive their own development and often show how a character reaches that point emotionally. This makes them feel like genuine alternate versions of the relationship rather than shock scenes added for effect.

Every major character also has multiple endings across both route types, which gives completionists plenty to uncover. The structure can become slightly predictable after several routes, but the differences between the characters are usually strong enough to keep the experience moving.

Yuhiru Feels Like an Actual Character

Otome protagonists can sometimes feel intentionally blank, but Yuhiru has considerably more personality.

She begins the story uncertain and somewhat passive, yet Oz constantly forces her to make difficult decisions. Her relationships develop alongside that change, and she gradually feels more involved in the story instead of simply reacting to the men around her.

This also helps the heavier moments land better. OVER REQUIEMZ deals with uncomfortable subjects, and having a protagonist with her own voice gives those scenes more weight.

Romance Is Not Always the Priority

Players coming purely for romance should know that OVER REQUIEMZ often has other things on its mind.

The mystery surrounding Oz, the characters’ pasts and the darker elements of each route regularly take priority over traditional romantic scenes. Some relationships feel more convincing because of that slower focus on trust and survival, but others can feel like they move too quickly once the romance finally starts.

The result is slightly uneven. At its best, the game builds relationships through shared experiences rather than constant flirting. At its weakest, the transition from character drama to romance can feel abrupt.

Oz Has Never Looked This Uncomfortable

Visually, OVER REQUIEMZ is one of its strongest areas.

Character designs are detailed without becoming overly busy, while the CG artwork does an excellent job of shifting between softer romantic moments and much darker scenes. Facial expressions are particularly effective when characters begin to lose control, and the use of colour helps separate the more dreamlike parts of Oz from its disturbing side.

The game also avoids simply copying famous imagery from The Wizard of Oz. Familiar ideas are present, but they are reworked enough to give this version of Oz its own personality.

A Story That Takes Its Darkness Seriously

The darker content deserves more than a passing mention.

OVER REQUIEMZ includes themes involving violence, abuse, obsession, self-harm and other disturbing material, especially within its Dark routes. These moments are not hidden behind a light romantic presentation, and some scenes can become genuinely uncomfortable.

That will be part of the appeal for players specifically looking for darker otome stories, but it also means this is not an easy recommendation for everyone.

Verdict

OVER REQUIEMZ stands out because it knows exactly what kind of game it wants to be. Its best routes blend character drama, mystery and romance. The darker material also feels purposeful rather than added simply for shock value.

The route structure can become repetitive, and some romances develop more naturally than others. Clearly labelled choices also remove some tension from major decisions. Even so, the strong art direction, memorable cast and well-developed Fact and Dark system give the game a clear identity.

Players looking for a darker otome game with strong character writing will find plenty to enjoy here. The number of alternate paths also gives OVER REQUIEMZ enough reason for multiple playthroughs.
