Nintendo Switch 2 Price Increase: Should You Buy Before September?

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already become one of the biggest gaming hardware stories of the year, but now there is another reason people are looking at it closely: the price is about to change.

For many players, buying a new console is not just about excitement. It is also about timing. You want the right games, the right value, and ideally, the right price. That is why the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 price increase matters, especially for anyone who has been waiting before making the jump.

Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 price will increase in several regions starting September 1, 2026. In the United States, the console will move from $449.99 to $499.99. Canada and Europe are also listed for price revisions, with the European My Nintendo Store price rising from €469.99 to €499.99.

That means waiting could cost buyers more, at least in the regions included in Nintendo’s current announcement.

Why Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Price Going Up?

Nintendo says the decision is connected to changes in market conditions and the wider global business outlook. In simple terms, the company is dealing with a more expensive hardware market than before.

Reports also point to rising component costs, especially memory, as one of the pressures behind the decision. Modern consoles depend heavily on parts that are also in high demand from other industries, including AI data centers, laptops, phones, and other electronics. When those parts become more expensive, hardware makers eventually have to decide whether to absorb the cost or pass some of it to customers.

In this case, Nintendo is choosing to raise the price.

That does not make the increase easier for buyers, but it does explain why this is happening now instead of later in the console’s life. Usually, people expect consoles to become cheaper over time. The Switch 2 is moving in the opposite direction, which makes this situation feel unusual.

Should You Buy Nintendo Switch 2 Before the Price Increase?

If you already know you want a Nintendo Switch 2, buying before September makes sense. The hardware will be the same, but the price will be lower. There is no real benefit in paying more for the same system later unless you are waiting for a special bundle, a specific game, or a revised model.

The strongest reason to buy now is simple value. Saving $50 could cover part of a game, an accessory, or a few months of Nintendo Switch Online. For players who already plan to get games like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, or other Switch 2 titles, buying before the increase is the cleaner move.

But that does not mean everyone should rush.

If the current Switch 2 library does not excite you yet, waiting can still be reasonable. A console is only worth buying if you actually have something you want to play on it. Paying less is good, but buying hardware that sits in the box is not exactly a galaxy-brain move.
