Kitsune: The Journey of Adashino is heading to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in spring 2027. Announced during Nintendo’s latest Indie World presentation, this atmospheric adventure follows a young fox girl and her frog companion as they search for a way off a mysterious island.
Developed by Rias and published by room6, the game takes inspiration from Japanese folklore. Its unusual setting combines traditional shrines, glowing neon signs, and narrow streets that become increasingly unsettling after dark.
A Mysterious Journey Through Adashino Island
The story begins with two unlikely companions stranded on Adashino Island. What initially appears to be a quiet, beautiful place soon reveals a more threatening side. Strange creatures roam the darkness, and finding a route home means venturing into areas where danger could be waiting around the next corner.
Rather than focusing on constant combat, the adventure revolves around exploration and avoiding enemies. Players must navigate the island, investigate unfamiliar surroundings, and discover how its different locations connect.
The relationship between the fox girl and her frog companion also gives the journey a more personal focus. However, much of their story remains unexplained, including why they arrived on the island in the first place.
Light Plays an Important Role in Exploration
One of the more interesting ideas in Kitsune: The Journey of Adashino is how it uses light. Players can illuminate shrines to reveal previously inaccessible routes and uncover secrets hidden throughout the island. However, light is a limited resource. Dangerous oni demons lurk in the shadows, forcing players to think carefully about when to use it. Escape sequences add another layer of tension, particularly when there is little room to avoid an approaching threat.
The contrast between peaceful exploration and sudden danger could become an important part of the game’s identity. Its combination of warm lanterns, colorful neon lighting, and traditional Japanese architecture already gives the environments a distinctive appearance.

Kitsune: The Journey of Adashino is scheduled to release in spring 2027 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. A PC version is also planned.
An exact release date and pricing have not yet been announced. For now, the main questions concern how varied the island’s exploration will be and how much freedom players will have when dealing with its supernatural inhabitants. The setting is certainly worth watching. But the real test will be whether its lighting mechanics and mysterious story can remain interesting throughout the journey.
