Terranigma is officially making a comeback more than 30 years after its original release. Clear River Games has announced that the classic action RPG will launch for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2027.
The new release will also arrive on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For Nintendo players, however, this marks the first time Terranigma will be available on a modern Nintendo system.
Terranigma Returns After More Than 30 Years
Originally developed by Quintet, Terranigma first launched for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1995. A European version followed in 1996, but the game never received an official North American release.
That history makes the new version especially important for players in the United States and Canada. Many RPG fans have heard about Terranigma over the years, but there has never been an easy official way to play it in North America.
The game follows Ark, a young man whose actions begin a much larger journey involving the restoration and development of the world. Its story moves through themes such as life, civilization, creation and destruction.
Terranigma also stands out for its real-time combat. Ark fights with a spear and can use thrust attacks, jumping strikes and dashes while enemies move freely around the battlefield. The system mixes action gameplay with traditional RPG progression rather than relying on turn-based battles.
The New Version Will Include Improvements
Clear River Games says the upcoming release will respect the original game while adding several improvements and adjustments. New bonus content is also planned, although the publisher has not explained every addition yet.
Original character designer Kamui Fujiwara is involved with the project as an adviser. He will provide new key artwork and in-game design work while also giving feedback during development.
The original game’s pixel art and soundtrack are also a major part of its reputation. Rather than rebuilding Terranigma into a completely different RPG, the new release appears focused on preserving the identity of the 1995 game while making it easier to play on modern hardware.
A Long-Awaited Return for RPG Fans
Terranigma has never received an official re-release since its original launch. Interest in bringing the game back has remained strong, and fans even organized a petition in 2021 asking for an archive release. Fujiwara and composer Miyoko Kobayashi supported that campaign.
The wait is now finally coming to an end.
Terranigma will launch for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2027. An exact release date and pricing have not yet been announced.
