Nintendo Reportedly Considers a 1080p OLED Model for Switch 2

Nintendo may already be exploring an OLED version of the Switch 2, although the company has not officially confirmed that a new model is in development.

According to a report from South Korean technology publication ZDNet Korea, Nintendo is considering a future Switch 2 model equipped with a 1920×1080 rigid OLED display. The information reportedly comes from several people familiar with the display industry rather than an announcement from Nintendo itself.

The proposed screen would maintain the same Full HD resolution as the LCD panel used in the current Switch 2. Therefore, this would not be a resolution upgrade for existing Switch 2 owners. The main improvements would instead come from the OLED technology itself, including deeper black levels, stronger contrast, faster pixel response times and potentially more vibrant image quality.

For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch OLED Model uses a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1280×720. A Switch 2 OLED would combine the visual advantages of that panel technology with the higher 1080p handheld resolution already supported by Nintendo’s latest console.

Nintendo Has Not Made a Final Decision

The report does not claim that the Switch 2 OLED has entered full development. Nintendo is reportedly still evaluating whether the model would be commercially viable, with production costs described as one of the biggest concerns.

Rigid OLED panels are generally more expensive than the LCD technology used in the standard Switch 2. A more expensive display could force Nintendo to increase the price of the console, especially as memory and semiconductor costs continue to affect the wider electronics industry.

Samsung Display is reportedly interested in supplying the OLED panels, but there is currently no indication that a final manufacturing agreement has been signed. The report only suggests that Samsung would compete for the contract should Nintendo decide to move forward with the system.

Nintendo’s current Switch 2 already features a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD touchscreen with HDR support, variable refresh rate and refresh rates of up to 120Hz in handheld mode. This means an OLED edition would need to offer more than a simple panel replacement to justify a higher price.

The company could potentially improve battery efficiency, storage capacity, screen response or the overall design, but none of those changes are mentioned in the current report. Details such as the screen size, refresh rate, brightness and battery life also remain unknown.

A Switch 2 OLED May Still Be Years Away

Even if Nintendo approves the model, it is unlikely to arrive soon. Industry sources say development could begin near the end of 2026. Mass production may then start in late 2027 or early 2028.

This should not be treated as a confirmed release window. It is only the earliest estimate mentioned in the report. The schedule also depends on Nintendo moving forward with the device.

The timing would fit Nintendo’s previous hardware strategy. The original Switch launched in 2017. The Switch OLED Model followed more than four years later, in 2021. A similar refresh could renew interest in Switch 2 without replacing it with a more powerful successor.

An OLED edition could also address a common complaint about the standard Switch 2. Its LCD screen already offers higher resolution, HDR and smoother refresh rates. However, some players still prefer the deeper blacks and stronger contrast of the older Switch OLED Model.

Current Switch 2 owners should not delay a purchase based on this report. They should also not expect an upgrade announcement soon. Nintendo has not confirmed the system, its specifications or a possible release date.

The report suggests that Nintendo is examining its options. However, the Switch 2 OLED remains an early proposal rather than a finished product. Until Nintendo makes an official announcement, it should be treated as a hardware rumor rather than a guaranteed future release.
