Nintendo has confirmed that a revised Nintendo Switch 2 model with a user-replaceable battery will launch across Europe later this year.
The updated console is expected to arrive in autumn 2026 as part of a wider hardware transition that will also affect Joy-Con 2 controllers, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and selected classic controllers.
Despite the hardware changes, this is not a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED or a more powerful Pro model. Nintendo says the revised version will offer the same functionality as the Switch 2 currently available in stores. The main difference is that owners will be able to replace the battery more easily when it reaches the end of its useful life.
What Is Changing in the New Nintendo Switch 2?
The revised Nintendo Switch 2 will use a 5,172mAh battery, slightly smaller than the 5,220mAh battery inside the current model. That represents a reduction of less than one percent.
Nintendo has not announced an updated battery life estimate, so it is too early to say whether the smaller capacity will have any noticeable effect during normal gameplay.
The console itself will also become slightly heavier. The main unit will weigh approximately 411 grams, compared with 401 grams for the current version. With both Joy-Con 2 controllers attached, the total weight will increase from around 534 grams to 548 grams.
These are minor physical changes, and Nintendo has made it clear that performance and general functionality will remain the same.
Why Is Nintendo Making This Change?
Nintendo is revising its hardware ahead of new European battery regulations that take effect on February 18, 2027.
The rules require portable batteries inside many consumer devices to be removable and replaceable by the end user. Manufacturers can still require basic tools, but replacing the battery should not demand specialist equipment or permanently damage the device.
For Switch 2 owners, this could make long-term maintenance much easier. Instead of replacing an entire console or sending it away for a battery service, users should eventually be able to purchase an official replacement kit and install a new battery.
Nintendo plans to sell replacement battery kits through its European online store, although pricing and detailed installation instructions have not yet been announced.
Joy-Con 2 and Pro Controller Revisions Are Also Coming
The Nintendo Switch 2 is not the only product receiving a battery-related update.
Revised Joy-Con 2 controllers are expected to arrive in winter 2026. Their battery capacity will remain unchanged, but each controller will become approximately two grams heavier.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller will receive a more noticeable change. Its battery capacity will fall from 1,070mAh to 897mAh, a reduction of around 16 percent. At the same time, the controller will become seven grams lighter.
Nintendo has not revealed how this change will affect the Pro Controller’s battery life. Until official estimates appear, buyers should not assume the reduced capacity will translate directly into 16 percent shorter playtime.
Revised Nintendo 64 and GameCube controllers will follow in early 2027. The Nintendo 64 controller will keep the same battery capacity, while the GameCube controller will receive a slightly larger 525mAh battery.
Can Buyers Choose Between the Two Switch 2 Models?
Nintendo will introduce the revised products gradually as existing stock sells out. Customers ordering from the official Nintendo Store will not be able to choose between the original and revised versions.
Once the current stock disappears, Nintendo will automatically replace it with the new hardware. Availability may vary between countries and retailers during the transition.
The revised products will use different model numbers and packaging details, which should make them easier to identify once they reach stores.
What Happens to the Original Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo will not create similar user-replaceable battery revisions for the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch OLED Model.
The company plans to continue producing the original Switch family throughout 2026. However, it will stop supplying these consoles to European retailers and end sales through the official Nintendo Store around mid-February 2027.
Retailers may continue selling any remaining stock after that date.
This does not mean support for the original Switch is ending. Nintendo says games, accessories, the eShop, and Nintendo Switch Online services will remain available. The change only affects the sale of the existing hardware in the region.

The revised model does not offer better graphics, faster performance, a new display, or longer battery life. Its main advantage is the new Nintendo Switch 2 replaceable battery, which could become useful after several years of regular use.
For new buyers, waiting may make sense if long-term repairability is a priority. Everyone else can continue using the current Switch 2 without worrying about compatibility or future support.
The new Nintendo Switch 2 revision may not be the exciting OLED or Pro announcement some players are waiting for, but the replaceable battery could make the console easier and cheaper to maintain over its lifetime.
